Switching to a vegetarian lifestyle can be tough at first. With enough planning and information, one can enjoy the benefits of a healthy vegetarian diet.

A vegetarian lifestyle can be difficult to maintain at first. Eliminating meat from the diet is about more than meal planning. There are many tips that can help ease the transition into vegetarianism.

Research and Learn

Even if one is looking into vegetarianism purely for health reasons, such as lowering cholesterol, knowledge can help maintain this way of life long term. Research the conditions of factory farm animals destined for slaughter. Read about the working conditions for humans in meat processing plants.

While this can be disturbing, it can also be the fuel for change. Ignorance does not help improve the lives of humans or animals. By being knowledgeable, we can take back control.

Choose the Right Form of Vegetarianism

There are two popular variations. Choosing the right one can help one be successful in keeping it up. Of course, it is perfectly fine to implement one's own vegetarian regimen.

An ovo-lacto vegetarian does not eat meat of any kind. This includes poultry, fish, beef, lamb, or shellfish. They are willing to consume dairy products and eggs, since no animals were slaughtered.

Vegans are individuals who do not consume any animal products at all. This includes all meat, dairy, and egg products. Many do not even wear leather or use non-consumable items that have animal products in their ingredients.

Many people start out as ovo-lacto vegetarians and make the transition to being vegan. For those who are concerned about being successful, it can help to consciously reduce the consumption of meat. Start by selecting a couple of days to try eliminating meat from the diet.

Protein Fears Quelled

People often worry that becoming a vegetarian will deprive them of necessary protein. There is no need to be concerned. Protein can be found in plenty of other foods.

Many vegetables contain protein, such as asparagus, peas, spinach, corn, and sweet potatoes. Beans are also packed with protein. Lentils are a very popular protein source as well.

If one is truly afraid that they are not getting enough protein, there are also supplements. Protein shakes and powder can be used. Vegans can benefit from soy protein shakes, while ovo-lacto vegetarians can use whey or casein.

While it can be tempting to live on substitute meat products, this is not a healthy choice. Many prepackaged and processed meals are high in sugar and calories. They also contain an ingredient list that can be frighteningly long and complicated.

Be Creative when Dining Out

Favorite restaurants and diners can still be enjoyed without meat. It is possible to have a decent meal without having to order a salad as an entree. Sometimes this takes some creativity and investigation skills.

Since more people are becoming vegetarians, many restaurants are adding vegetable choices to the menu. Even if there seem to be no options available, feel free to ask. Some places will have a substitute burger, but not have it listed. Other entrees can be modified easily enough.

Italian, Thai, and Mexican restaurants have a wide selection of vegetarian dishes. Trying new foods can be a very exciting and fun experience. One can still have the most amazing dinner without meat.

Choosing a vegetarian lifestyle will have many benefits. If done properly, it is a very healthy diet. It is also a statement against factory farms and the mistreatment of animals. Consider switching to a vegetarian way of living!
