There are strategies to make using a public restroom less stressful for alternative gendered people.

A common issue for people who have an alternative gender identity is using a public restroom. This can be a very stressful experience for people who are transgender, androgynous, or genderqueer. There are some strategies that can be used to reduce this potentially embarrassing and awkward experience.

Be Confident!

Most people who are in the restroom with you will not be examining you with a finely tuned microscope. However, if you are nervous this may end up drawing more attention to yourself. Confidently walk into your chosen restroom and do whatever you have to do. This is especially true for people who identify as transgender. FTM individuals usually have an easier time than men transitioning to female. Men usually do not pay as much attention, and tend to keep to themselves. Women tend to be more social. Either way, if someone asks or makes a statement about your gender, tell them you are in the right place and go about your business.

Look for Unisex Bathrooms

Some places like malls or other shopping centers will have unisex bathrooms. These are usually located near the general restrooms, but can sometimes be off to the side. The original intention of such rooms was for single parents with young children. However, they can be used by anyone. Most are one room stalls. These are great for people who are androgynous or genderqueer.

Choose a Bathroom with Less Traffic

If you are anxious or nervous about the whole ordeal, it can be helpful to stick with restrooms that are less populated. Many public places will have bathrooms spread throughout the area. Most likely there is one large restroom area, but there can be smaller ones elsewhere. For example, a shopping mall usually has one large restroom area, and often times individual stores within the mall will have one as well. If possible, select a restroom that is not as busy or crowded. Chances are you will have it all to yourself.

Using a STP for FTM

A stand-to-pee (STP) is a device female-to-male transgenders can use to appear more male. Like the name sounds, these allow biological women to stand while they relieve themselves. Some of them resemble male genitalia and can be used at a urinal. Others look more like a funnel, and can be used in a stall. This can make passing in the restroom much easier. You do not have to be transgender to use a STP. Many women enjoy having the option to stand, and this especially comes in handy while on the road or in a particularly dirty restroom. These can be found online. The ones that look like male genitalia are more expensive, and usually cost about $75.00. The funnel design costs approximately $10.00.

Do not put yourself through an excessive amount of stress when it comes to using the restroom. There are some strategies that can make this experience less stressful. Take advantage of less populated or unisex bathrooms when you can find them, be confident, and use tools if it is necessary.
