Not everyone likes having to wear bras, especially in the summer. Some women find them uncomfortable, or prefer a more sporty look. Luckily there are options for women looking to escape the world of under-wires and cups. There are some tops that can replace bras, keeping you supported and comfortable.
Shelf Tank Camisoles
These tank tops include a built in support garment within the making of the tank. Most will have an additional sheet of fabric around the front, and an elastic band that provides the support. The straps will most likely be adjustable, though not always. The benefit is that these are very comfortable and can be worn by themselves. This makes them perfect for the summer time. They are also great for women who want some extra support at night when they are sleeping. Different fabrics are available and will make the fit slightly different. A shelf camisole with a Lycra or Spandex composition will be form fitting, and might be best worn under another top. If the fabric content is mostly cotton, the fit will be less snug. This will make the top more suitable to wear by itself.
Sport Camisoles
This is a great option for women performing low to moderate impact sports. Activities like yoga, cycling, pilates, and tai chi are examples of sports with a lower impact level. The straps will be thin and adjustable, and there will be a support band around the top. Some camisoles are specially designed to provide enough support for higher impact activities such as running. These will have a stronger support band and wider straps to provide an extra amount of support. The material will have a high Lycra or Spandex content, which is ideal for helping sweat evaporate. Many women prefer having fewer layers on when working out, and these tops accomplish just that. They also tend to be more comfortable than sport bras, especially the high impact ones.
Performance Tanks
Women who are smaller in size can get away with wearing athletic performance tanks. These are tank tops with a very high elastic composition to them. Some manufacturers will use Lycra, Spandex, or other kinds of elastic fabrics. They can be tucked into pants to provide a comfortable undershirt without the need for a bra. Since these are designed for athletes, many will have vented areas to allow for better air circulation, keeping you cool and dry. Keep in mind that this is not ideal for women who are larger than a B cup size. There is not a support band, and the straps will not be adjustable.
You don't have to put up with uncomfortable bras. Wearing a camisole or a special tank might be all you need. Instead of putting up with chaffing and straps cutting into your shoulders, consider your other options.
